Recently there were rounds of warnings on whats app and
various facebook groups regarding the “Blue Whale Game Challenge.” All
of them just stated one thing; ensure that the kid stays away from this
dangerous game. To add to this there was also a video of a 6 year old girl
downloading the game and informing her aunty about the same. As mothers we are
constantly hearing; the various do’s and don’ts for the kid and now the social
media too is telling the same. Tired of suggestions; now my concern here is why
do we need such posts or warnings to keep our kids away from such games. The
first thing I fail to understand is why do kids as young as 4 years or for even
that matter 12 year old require a phone to play? Are there no kids’ toys or
games available to keep them busy? Do parents don’t want to buy them; thinking
they can play with the phone; just one investment or is there any other reason for
that. I am very keen to know.
Most of the couples today like to have their own privacy
and hence many keep their phone locked in order to keep their chat messages and
other details away from their partner. No they are not hiding; it is just that
they do not want to share; sometimes even a phone. In such scenarios why do
kids have access to such gadgets? The purpose of phone is to call and of course
with the help of smart phone many more things can be done. However, no where it
is mentioned that it is for kids. I know of parents who brag that their 3 year
old can use their smart phone in the best way; but wait are they supposed to do
so? Is it meant for them? Where are all those colours, paints, books and blocks
meant for the little toddlers? Are parents just showing that they are rich
enough to buy an I-phone for the kid?
Blue Whale game is just one of the many games which is
life threatening but exposing kids to smart phones is the equally harmful.
Today’s kids are glued to their smart phones which is affecting their eye
sight, reducing their concentration levels and keeping them away from enjoying
their childhood; most important phase of life. In my opinion just keeping these
games away is not the solution; keeping the phones away is the best part. We
grew up without phones and we did have the best of the time playing various indoor
and outdoor games. Let us all teach and share our experiences with the next
generation now. An initiative to show kids life beyond mobile phones.
